Torbjørn research is focused on biogeography and biosystematics of insects, in particular non-biting midges. He is involved in research contributing to and using DNA barcoding and coordinates the Norwegian Barcode of Life Network (NorBOL). He is curator of entomology at the NTNU University Museum in Trondheim
