Lund University, Sweden

Founded in 1666, Lund University is today one of the largest, oldest and broadest universities in Scandinavia. Lund University has an excellent academic reputation and around 47 000 students. The atmosphere of Lund is dominated by the university, with many traditions, historic buildings and museums. The most beloved place is the Botanical Garden, situated very close to the city centre.

Biology is today concentrated to the north university campus, situated 15 minutes walk from the city centre. The department of Biology has a staff of about 300 senior researchers and Ph D students, covering a large number of biological disciplines. It is an intellectually very busy and stimulating place with lots of scientific activities such as seminars, symposia, literature clubs, film clubs, excursions and dissertations. Outside the university, Lund has well organized botanical, entomological and ornitological societies which provide exciting activities for field biologists.

The disciplines of systematics biology have a long history in Lund, including both alpha taxonomy, phylogenetics and studies of evolutionary processes at the cutting edge between systematics, genetics and ecology. Today the focus is on plants (including mosses), fungi (especially lichens) and insects. The botanical and zoological collections (c. 12 million accessions) are currently being merged into a modern and new-built biological archive.
