Fungal identification (5 ECTS)

(Course code: BIO402)

Description

This course is designed to provide the student with an introduction to the fungi and species identification, with emphasis on the most common species and genera in the Nordic countries. You will learn about the basic theory and background of fungal morphology, scientific names and classifications, about the ecology and roles of fungi in nature, and about poisonous mushrooms. The field week will provide "hands on" experience with the fungi. Fresh material will be collected and brought to the lab for examination and a joint exhibition. Species identification will mainly be based on macro-morphological characters but microscopy will be introduced. By the end of the course the student should have achieved the skills to identify and recognize a number of our most common, edible, and poisonous mushrooms and be inspired to learn more about the tremendous diversity of fruiting body forms and life strategies within the fungal kingdom.
